Sergei Tolmachev and George Tabatadze gave a seminar presentation to Oregon State University students and faculty. Dr. Tolmachev discussed the USTUR research program as a whole. Dr. Tabatadze focused on the radiochemical protocols that the USTUR laboratory uses for actinide analysis, and provided results on the amount of plutonium in tissues from former nuclear workers.
Radiochemical Analysis of Plutonium in Tissues from Former Nuclear Workers

The United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries (USTUR) studies actinide (plutonium, americium, and uranium) biokinetics and tissue dosimetry by following up occupationally exposed former nuclear workers. The USTUR’s research relies heavily upon postmortem autopsy findings and radiochemical analysis of tissues. Radiochemical analysis provides information on actinide concentrations, radionuclide distribution and retention in the human body. This information is essential for radiation dose estimation from internally deposited radionuclides as well as for actinide biokinetic modeling. This presentation will give a brief overview of the USTUR program; describe protocols used at the USTUR laboratory for actinide analysis, and present results on plutonium in tissues from former nuclear workers.
