Invited Lectures at Laval University and McMaster University

While in Canada, USTUR’s director, Dr. Sergei Tolmachev, gave invited lectures at Laval University, Quebec City, Quebec (March 31, 2011), and McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario (April 7, 2011). The first of these lectures on the USTUR program was given at Laval University as a part of Prof. Larivière’s teaching course on Radiochemistry/Radioecology. The second was a colloquium presentation given at McMaster University’s Medical Physics & Applied Radiation Sciences department. It was a core part of a technical discussion on Bruce Power-McMaster University’s alpha dosimetry service.

Both lectures were titled “U.S. Transuranium and Uranium Registries: A brief overview.” They covered the history and mission of the Registries, registrant statistics, and actinide analysis of human tissues, including analytical techniques and methods used at the Registries. The results of actinide determination in human tissues using ICP-MS were shown and compared with alpha spectrometry measurements. A brief introduction to internal dose calculation based on measured actinide concentrations was given. The distribution of terminal lung dose rates in USTUR Registrants was presented and discussed with respect to primary lung cancer death incidents.
