Former director, Ronald Kathren, and current director, Sergei Tolmachev, published a paper in Health Physics. The article, “Natural Uranium Tissue Content of Three Caucasian Males”, discusses the uranium content and distribution in three USTUR donors who were not occupationally exposed to uranium.
USTUR director, Dr. Sergei Tolmachev, has been reappointed to serve on the editorial board for the Japanese Journal of Health Physics (JJHP) from August 2015 to July 2017. He worked in Japan at the Japanese Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), Tokai-mura and the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS), Chiba before joining the College of Pharmacy faculty in January 2007. Dr. Tolmachev has served on the JJHP editorial board since November 2009.

USTUR faculty are authors on three platform presentations at the upcoming 60th Annual Health Physics Society Meeting in Indianapolis, IN, July 12-16, 2015.
On April 5, 2015, Abel Gonzales (former member of ICRP Main Commission) and Ludwig Feinendegen (Professor Emeritus, Nuclear Medicine, Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany) visited the USTUR. Dr. Tolmachev provided a brief overview of the USTUR history, past and present achievements, and laboratory tour to the guests. Given the unique resources available at the Registries, Dr. Gonzales expressed surprise that the USTUR does not contribute to the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) activities related to the biological effects of uranium.
On March 24, 2015, Patricia Worthington, director of DOE Office of Health and Safety (AU-10), Isaf Al-Nabulsi (RERF Program Manager, DOE/AU-10), and Joey Zhou (USTUR Program Manager, DOE/AU-13) visited the USTUR.

The USTUR’s director, Sergei Tolmachev, was invited to give a presentation at the 1st International Workshop on Sample/Tissue Archiving of Radiobiology (STAR) meeting in Kyoto, Japan, May 24-25. His presentation was designed to inform the scientific community about the USTUR: its history, the valuable samples housed at its repository, and recently conducted research. Following the STAR meeting, Dr. Tolmachev attended the International Council on Radiation Research (ICRR) meeting where he presented a poster about USTUR. The ICRR meeting was also held in Kyoto, Japan, May 25-29.
USTUR research impacts our knowledge about uranium and transuranics, and how they behave in and affect the human body. The large number of publications produced by the USTUR, and the frequency with which they are cited, illustrates this.
The USTUR’s informational brochures were recently redesigned with up-to-date information and a simple, easy-to-read layout. The NHRTR brochure summarizes samples availabe at the USTUR, and will be distributed to researchers who are interested in collaborating with the Registries. The Registrant brochure is designed for exposed workers who would like to learn more about the USTUR and/or potentially donate tissues to the program.
Maia Avtandilashvili attended a week-long course on radiation epidemiology and dosimetry. The National Cancer Institute’s 2015 Radiation Epidemiology and Dosimetry Course – held in Rockville, MD – covered a range of topics including statistics, dosimetry, radiobiology, genomics, and occupational and medical epidemiology.
George Tabatadze has been appointed as a member of the International Collaboration Committee (ICC) of the Health Physics Society (HPS). He will begin his three-year term starting July 2015. Dr. Tabatadze previously served as an advisor for the committee in 2014. He has actively participated in planning the special session for the 2015 HPS annual meeting in Indianapolis, IN, including arrangements for the special speaker visit from the Georgian chapter of the Health Physics Society (Georgian Health Physics Association – GHPA). He also played a key role in nominating the GHPA president-elect for the 2015 HPS G. William Morgan lectureship.
