USTUR faculty attend scientific meetings

In October, three scientific meetings were attended by USTUR faculty members.

European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS)

Stacey McComish gave a presentation on the biodosimetry of plutonium workers at a joint meeting between EURADOS Working Group 7 (internal dosimetry) and Working Group 10 (retrospective dosimetry). She also attended the plenary meeting of EURADOS WG7, Bologna, Italy, October 1-3, 2013.

Health Effects of Incorporated Radionuclides (HEIR)

Maia Avtandilashvili gave a podium presentation describing her research on the deposition and retention of UF6 in a USTUR Registrant. She also presented a poster that summarized a study that will use Bayesian analysis to determine equivalent lung doses for each deceased USTUR Registrant. The HEIR conference was held in Berkeley, CA, October 13-17, 2013.

International Symposium on Radiation Protection (ICRP)

Sergei Tolmachev attended ICRP 2013: the 2nd International Symposium on the System of Radiological Protection, Abu Dhabi, October 22-24, 2013.

Health Physics Society meeting

USTUR faculty were authors on three presentations at the 57th Annual Meeting of the Health Physics Society (HPS) in Sacramento, CA, July 22-26, 2012. The presentations were given by Maia Avtandilashvili (USTUR, photo at right), Sergei Tolmachev (USTUR), and Majid Khalaf (ISU).

EURADOS annual meeting

Ms. Stacey McCord represented the USTUR at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the European Dosimetry Group (EURADOS), Prague, Czech Republic, February 7-9, 2011. Ms. McCord participated in the Working Group 7 (WG7) on “Internal Dosimetry” and attended the Winter School on “Radiation Protection for Medical Staff. Her presentation to WG7 titled, “Microdistribution and Long-Term Retention of 239Pu(NO3)4 in the Respiratory Tract: A progress report” can be downloaded from the following link.

EURADOS 2011 Annual Meeting

Japan Atomic Energy Agency/Environmental Protection Agency Workshop

USTUR’s director (Tony James) is one of 7 US representatives participating in the 4th JAEA/EPA Workshop, Tokai-mura, Japan, November 6 – 8. He will present an overview of USTUR’s research objectives and progress on our current 5-y DOE grant.
